A web platform formaster's dissertations

An online platform for master's dissertations at a university: the student chooses a topic and submits each stage, the supervisor comments and approves, the secretariat organizes the committees. The platform has been live since 6 Nov 2026, after a full functional test.

The situation

What had to be covered

A dissertation passes through many hands: the student chooses a topic and requests supervision, submits stages and document versions, the supervisor comments, and the secretariat and committee organize the defences. The platform had to keep all of this in one place, for all master's students.

We do not have usage figures yet: at launch we ran a full functional test, across all roles and on the phone.

What we did

The solution

  • sign-up as student or teacher, with invitation codes and approval by the supervisor or administrator
  • topics, supervision requests and 11 configurable stages, with deadlines and statuses
  • versioned documents, comments on each version and a similarity check within the platform
  • the thesis skeleton generated automatically in Word, with cover, declaration, table of contents, chapters and bibliography
  • committees, defence scheduling and CSV export
How it works

Four roles, one platform

Roles: student, supervising teacher, overseer and administrator. Notifications arrive in the app and by e-mail.

Student

Chooses a topic, submits stages and versions, receives comments.

  • IEEE or APA 7 bibliography
  • generated .docx skeleton

Supervisor

Approves requests, comments on versions, holds meetings with minutes.

  • tasks per thesis
  • messages per thesis, group or cohort

Overseer

Has its own view of theses and stages.

  • works on the phone too

Administrator

Approves accounts, organizes committees and defences.

  • guides, templates, CSV export
  • daily limit for the AI assistant
Technical side

No external libraries

The server runs on Node.js 22 with no npm dependencies: authentication, sessions, live page updates, e-mail sending and ZIP and DOCX generation are written within the project. The interface is a web app installable on the phone, with a light or dark theme.

The platform runs on our server, in a container, behind a TLS proxy. The database is a file with atomic writes and copies kept for 30 days.

Security

Protected accounts

  • passwords stored with scrypt
  • password reset by e-mail, with a link valid for one hour
  • 7-day sessions
  • 15-minute lockout after 8 failed attempts
Claude's role

What Claude does in the platform

What Claude does

  • is the platform's academic assistant: rewriting, chapter review, outline, abstract in Romanian and English, bibliography check, defence preparation
  • is instructed not to invent data or sources
  • works within a daily per-user limit set by the administrator (25 requests a day by default)

What we do

  • defined the platform's requirements
  • put the platform into operation on our server
  • manage the accounts and the assistant's settings

The assistant helps with writing; the thesis and its review remain with the student and the supervisor.

A process with many stages and many people?

We can put it into a platform with roles, deadlines and versions, on your server.
